As an English instructor of composition and literature, I endeavor to make the process of writing both comprehensible and relevant for students. I base my courses on the belief that the purpose of higher education is to expand students’ understanding of the world so that they can position themselves advantageously within it. With this principle always in mind, I introduce students to texts that challenge them to critically read and reflect and to hone their skills in analysis and evaluation. While students learn a greater appreciation for literature as an art, perhaps more importantly,  they learn to critique sources, identify biases, and to substantiate their viewpoints with convincing, pertinent, and reliable evidence–skills necessary for success in any profession.
